Stratification

Watercolor and acrylic paint on paper, 24″ x 18,” 2021

Many of my paintings have hidden layers beneath their surfaces, each one telling its own story. This got me thinking about the concept of stratification — the act of sorting, whether it’s data, people, or objects. We naturally organize things into distinct layers, each building on what came before.

Just as we layer paint on a canvas, we do the same with our lives. We build over the beautiful and the flawed moments of our past. Our cities, too, are shaped by this process—new structures rise on top of old churches, homes, roads, constantly adding to the rich tapestry of history. Nothing, it seems, escapes the layering of life—the endless stratification of all things.
